Mark Williams finalised his trip to China for next month’s Wuhan Open with a 5-2 victory over Andres Petrov in Leicester.

The three-time world champion was level at 2-2 in the qualifying round at the Morningside Arena after his Estonian opponent recovered from trailing 2-0 before Williams claimed the final three frames to reach the last 64 (October 9-15 live on Eurosport and discovery+).

But world No. 19 Anthony McGill lost a decider on the final black to crash out in a shock 5-4 defeat to Ishpreet Singh Chadha.

McGill produced breaks of 132 and 89 as he hit back to lead 4-3 from 3-1 down, but lost the final two frames against India’s world No. 105, who produced runs of 105 and 52 before holding his nerve superbly to clear the blue, pink and black to edge through.

McGill was forced to sit and suffer after missing the match ball blue that would have left his opponent needing a snooker.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Jack Lisowski enjoyed knocks of 108, 61, 81 and 97 in a 5-0 whitewash of Jenson Kendrick that took just 56 minutes, while European Masters champion Barry Hawkins advanced with contributions of 76, 77 and 75 in a 5-1 win over Louis Heathcote.

The Wuhan Open is the first ranking event staged in mainland China since Judd Trump won the World Open in November 2019.

China is also hosting the Shanghai Masters, International Championship and World Open this season.
