Could Peter Shalulile be on his way to becoming the greatest PSL striker based on his numbers?

Could Peter Shalulile be on his way to becoming the greatest PSL striker based on his numbers?

That he is on his way to becoming the greatest striker to play in the PSL era could be an argued forever but fact is that Peter Shalulile’s numbers are louder than all.

The Mamelodi Sundowns forward is leaning towards becoming the first ever footballer to reach 100 goals in less than 200 appearances for a South African top tier league club.

From the cream of forwards which includes Bradley Grobler, Collins Mbesuma, Manuel ‘Tico-Tico’ Bucuane, Mabhuti Khenyeza, Daniel Mudau, and Siyabonga Nomvete who have already reached a ‘century’ of goals while doing duty for a PSL club all of them needed more than 200 appearances to reach 100 goals.

Yet, for Shalulile with all his limitations in the talent ranks, he is doing the most difficult and important job on the pitch with better results than all else to have ever played in the PSL.

The Namibian has reached his total of 98 goals to date in just 192 appearances and has at least eight games to play this season starting with tonight’s trip to Golden Arrows.

He has scored 71 goals in 111 appearances for Sundowns since joining at the beginning of the 2020/21 season.

At Highlands Park he scored 27 in 81 appearances.

His numbers dwarf anything that was done by the all-time top scorer Nomvete through all the three spells that he had playing in the PSL for African Wanderers, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Moroka Swallows, and AmaZulu.

Though he only has 11 goals in the league this season, Shalulile is the leading scorer in the DStv Premiership and has another eight in other competitions.

He has made 23 goal contributions (19 goals and 4 assists) in 27 games this season.

Shalulile’s goals:

Sundowns – 71 (111 games) plus 19 assists

2022/23 – 19 (27 games) plus 4 assists

2021/22 – 30 (45 games) plus 7 assists

2020/21 – 22 (39 games) plus 8 assists

Highlands Park – 27 (81 games) plus 6 assists

2019/20 – 19 (39 games) plus 2 assists

2018/19 – 7 (27 games) plus 4 assists

2017/18 – NFD

2016/17 – 1 (15 games)

Total: 98 goals (192 games) plus 50 assists
